So what happened on August 4,  2007?

At about 9:00
a.m. Mike and
other helpers
from the
Greater
Chicago Food
Depository
pulled into the
parking lot
next to Kelly
Hall in a big
semi-trailer
truck filled
with fresh
produce and
other staples.
The food was unloaded from each side of
the truck  and sorted into manageable sacks
by volunteers. Below you see fresh
produce, including lettuce, strawberries,
and melons being sorted for freshness.
Dry goods from the other side of the truck were
sorted, bagged and distributed: chicken salad,
macaroni & cheese, canned green beans and
peaches, noodles, spaghetti,  tuna and more.
Then neighbors from the area began to arrive.
Neighborhood residents signed in at
the registration table- "Just name and
address, please." (Above)
They were greeted by friendly alums and
family from the University of Notre Dame
with lemonade and home baked treats.
(Note that ND alum in the green cap was joined by her
two sons- the good looking guys next to her.  What a
great idea! Something for the family to do together.)
Then each person
was greeted by a
volunteer who
escorted him or her
around the truck
and helped gather
what they wanted
from each of the
stations.

Left, Mary, age 10,
escorts a lady to the
first stop. Right,
Mary helps another
with her selections.
At each station, great volunteers
waited for the next "customer."
Most of the stations were
manned by parishioners from
St. Paul of the Cross Parish in
Park Ridge, IL.
Volunteers and
neighbors of all
ages spent a
beautiful
morning
together....

....under the
watchful eye and
gentle command
of Fr. Bob.
The next
Give-Away is
Wednesday,
September 5.
3:30 - 7:00  p.m.

The Mission will
be having
monthly food
Give-Aways in
addition to the
weekly Tuesday
night Food Pantry.

Call Fr. Bob to
arrange a date for
your group to
serve.

According to a lady
from the Greater
Chicago Food
Depository, it was
the best-run mobile
food pantry yet!
Fr. Bob's 20 years
of experience with
similar operations
in the Bronx was
evident.
So what happened on August 4, 2007? Volunteers
and those they served in Humboldt Park looked into
each others' eyes- and saw Christ looking back.
